Reasons for conflict
Some Native Americans took violent measures against the Colonists because they couldn't understand how the Colonists' settled matters politically and legally. Also they didn't want their land being taken. These tribes didn't share a common understanding of law and justice with the Colonists. Even if they had this knowledge, they couldn't use it because the Colonists enslaved them, forced religion upon them, and treated them as inferior beings. They also tried to force them to live in small areas of land called "reservations". In 1763, the British issued a royal proclamation reserving land beyond the Appalachians for Native American hunting grounds, off limits to new colonial settlers. The Colonists, however, disliked the proclamation and even ignored it. The defeat of the British in the American Revolution increased westward migration because it was then legal to go west. The 1787 Northwest Ordinance was an attempt to peacefully take Native American land in the Ohio valley, however it was ignored by the Native Americans. These settlers were invading their territory and the Native Americans decided to respond to this with violence.
